A creation myth can be described as an ancient story detailing the origin of the world, a people, or a piece of reality. In high school, I recall being exposed to this art form through the story of Pangu and The Cosmic Egg from Chinese folklore. This extended my interest to other similar stories, such as that of Izanagi and Izanami, “Let there be light…,” and even the Big Bang theory, which technically fits this mold.
I’ve employed this myth-as-art practice on a microcosmic scale, creating a fantastical origin for a nameless bridge that stands in my hometown. There is nothing particularly special about this bridge. I watched it be built in 2022 (see photo below); it is neither historic nor remarkable by any measure. It was only erected to reroute a trail once directing walkers to proceed from the woods to along the side of the busy road. It has a fan base of 1.
My film combines ideas from the concept of liminal spaces (but outdoors), the magical girl anime genre, Studio Ghibli artistry, mathematical alchemy, and, of course, primordial creation myths…
[synopsis______Unknown to the first physical being to cross, the Bridge only exists in this realm for pre-determined windows of time; this lack of knowledge leaves Her trapped when an exit isn’t taken at the right moment. Riparian Spirits, who are familiar with its tricks, try to save Her life, but the only way they can is by transforming Her into the Bridge Keeper. Now, as the first and last Keeper, the opener and closer of the temporal window, She decides a final, permanent interval which locks it to our realm forever.]

I always start with a simple outline (a list of things that will happen), and, for this project, I did not create an actual, correctly-formatted script. It was June 2 2025 when I made the outline and I finished the story board on August 6 2025. It was recorded between October 1 2025 and December 31 2025 on a Nikon Z5 with a Pocket Dispo Lens (which is where a lens from a disposable camera has been placed into a 3D-printed mount).
From then until the end of May 2026, I worked on editing and created a solid final draft before any sound design or animation. I came into contact with the animator, Hana Chen, on May 20 2026; as she worked on the spirits, I worked on the sound design.
